UT Summer Housing Manual -- Online!

Why is this online?

Hi. I'm Terry Biel and I decided to put the summer housing manual online. In my time with Residence Life it's become clear that knowledge about how we are supposed to do things is very fragmented and sprinkled throughout the staff. That would be alright, except it means that people in positions of leadership (myself included) aren't always the best source of information, and that can be frustrating since supervisors (myself included) often insist that staff come to us first with any questions.

Long story short: You rock
All of you, the Summer Housing Assistants, have some knowledge and wisdom to contribute. In fact, some of you have a lot of knowledge and wisdom to contribute. The truth is, all of us together are smarter than any one of us on our own. So, I set up this wiki site.

Short story longer: Things change
On top of that, we all know things can change pretty swiftly in Res Life. A printed manual is likely to be outdated within a month. I will be sure to inform you, in writing and in person, whenever things change, but this online manual will serve as a backup instead of us issuing 20 revised manuals anytime something changes.

How it works
You probably know that Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. The "wiki" part is the "anyone can edit" part. This site is set up so any SHA can edit or add pages, and I really want to encourage you to do so. I've started with items that we'll go over in training, but as things come up during the year, please update this site so everyone can benefit from it.

Why you should care
Okay, pretend it's 4:30 a.m. and someone from a conference comes down to the front desk requesting a lockout key. Maybe you know what to do, or maybe you don't. If you're the RA on duty, do you want someone to call and wake you up for how to handle a lockout key? Wouldn't you rather they had someplace to look it up real quick? When you think of things people might need to know, post them up here.

There are pages on this site that describe "official policies," like the SHA Position Description. These are locked so they can only be edited by supervisors. Sorry!
